Islamic Culture Theme House

This theme house consists of Muslim and non-Muslim students coming from different backgrounds and different nations around the world.  At present there are 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide and they form the majority in more than 50 countries, such as Yemen, Palestine, Lebanon, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, and Nigeria.  More than a millennium of uninterrupted development in the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia have made Islam much more than a religion; it is the defining cultural element of every region in which it is the dominant religion.  In such regions, Islam permeates every aspect of an individual's life, whether he or she is religious or not.  The Theme House will not only serve as a sustaining and nurturing community for Muslim students on campus, but will also provide a meeting place of diverse cultures.  Students coming from any of the fifty predominantly Muslim countries, or in fact from any country worldwide, can thus come together here to share their experiences, their perceptions and understanding of Islam, as well as the myriad issues which affect them as students, as Muslims, and as human beings.  This Theme House can be a bridge across cultural divides and continents, a common ground for students who consider themselves part of the more than one-fifth of the world population which considers itself Muslim.  For non-Muslims the House can provide a remarkable opportunity to learn about a wide variety of lands, cultures, languages, and people, all of which come together under a single banner.
